Meet Shawn Li, an Asian American therapist in NYC

It’s time to gain clarity and hope for your path forward.

Finding the right therapist for yourself can be grueling. You want someone who feels supportive, has the right experience for your issues, and is convenient for you to see on a regular basis – the less you have to commute, the more time you can spend with your loved ones!

I work with adults and couples who want to flourish in spite of the hardships they encounter along the way. Trials can seem hopeless at times, and it’s crucial that you have the right space to feel seen, heard, and understood. We’ll work together (usually on a weekly basis), and I’ll take dedicated time to listen to your story and understand what your world has been like. We’ll talk about the good, the bad, and all the ambiguous in-betweens.

You’ll begin to get clarity on your values and your goals.

I’ll be there to help you clear the path forward.

Am I the right therapist for you?

You’ve tried to get guidance from your friends and loved ones about what you’re going through. You’ve bookmarked all the podcasts, and you have a never-ending list of book titles that you plan to get to when you have the time. Somehow, though, all this information actually adds to your overwhelm.

You’re now realizing that you’d really benefit from sitting with a professional who has already delved into the research, read the books, and specializes in what you need help with. You’re ready to talk to someone in real-time who can approach your problems with compassion and confidentiality.

My training as a systemic therapist means that I view the issues you face through the broader context of what’s going on around you. I know personally that the societal, cultural, familial, and natural environments you’re a part of can strongly influence how anxiety and stress show up in your life.

Clients say I’m intuitive, perceptive, and even funny at times! And while these accolades are great, I am ultimately here because I want to see all my clients access their joy and thrive. As my client, I want you to feel comfortable enough to get vulnerable. It’s a major privilege to walk alongside my clients as they do the courageous inner work necessary for healing.

My Story

My adolescence was formed through two places completely juxtaposed to one another. The first was in suburban New Jersey, where a strong sense of identity, belonging, and social support was cultivated. The second was in rural Georgia, which became the backdrop of destructive family trauma, a high-conflict home, and debilitating isolation.

My journey to mental wellness means that I deeply understand how context plays a part in your mental health. I also know what it’s like to be on “your side” of the therapy room. It can feel foreign, uncomfortable, and sometimes – even pointless. But I promise you this: seeking help always means you are on the right track.

Before becoming a mental health professional, I worked across several corporate industries for a decade, utilizing my business management and accounting degrees from Georgia Tech and Georgia State University. These distinct environments cemented my belief in the power of shared human connection, for that is what they all had in common. The ups and downs of life are weathered through experiencing and knowing that we aren’t alone in our suffering.
